System Engineer

Overview:

The role of a System Engineer requires strong technical skills in areas such as operating systems (e.g., Windows Server, Linux), networking protocols (e.g., TCP/IP), virtualization technologies (e.g., VMware), scripting languages (e.g., PowerShell), security principles (e.g., authentication methods), and system monitoring tools (e.g., Nagios). Additionally, they need problem-solving abilities, attention to detail, communication skills, and the ability to work well in a team environment to effectively manage complex systems in dynamic technology environments.

System Engineer Skills

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Manage and monitor all installed systems and infrastructure

  • Monitor and test application performance for potential bottlenecks, identify possible solutions, and work with developers to implement those fixes

  • Maintain security, backup, and redundancy strategies

  • Write and maintain custom scripts to increase system efficiency and lower the human intervention time on any tasks

  • Participate in the design of information and operational support systems

  • Liaise with vendors and other IT personnel for problem resolution
